“For Birds, Planes & Cello” CD cover

Composed by Miya Masaoka, ”For Birds, Planes & Cello” is a 54-minute field recording of bird and airplane sounds layered with cello performed by Joan Jeanrenaud. The chirps, twitters, squawks and warbles of birds recorded in a San Diego canyon mingle with the roars and hums of planes flying to and from the nearby airport. The cello, meanwhile, fades in and out of recognition, at times evoking bird sounds, at others droning and rumbling like the aircraft. 1is1 felt a minimal design was most appropriate. Utilitarian, vaguely industrial typography and thin, white, flowing paths are layered over snapshots of a cloudy sky at dusk.
